Plug Uglies / in "212"

Plug Uglies is 14 years old and is named after a motley and dangerous gang that roamed lower Manhattan 160 years ago. (Recent evidence, however, indicates the Plug Uglies actually terrorized Baltimore.)

Those cutthroats and blackguards would hardly be welcome today, as Plug Uglies is very much a cop bar, based on the many police department arm patches affixed to the wall. (Not just New York, but Atlanta, Chicago, South Park, Sun Valley and elsewhere.)

There are also street signs honoring Police Officer Anthony Sanchez, who was shot and killed in 1997 by a failed stockbroker attempting to rob his own father; and Sgt. Finbar Devine, who died in 1995 after leading NYPD's Emerald Society Pipes through 35 years of St. Patrick's Days parades.

The soundtrack is on the heavy metal side, and the beer list is more than decent, a 50-strong mix of craft beers and the predictable pilsners.

Lassa fever / in "Fatal"

Lassa fever , a severe viral disease occurring mostly in W Africa, characterized by high fever, muscle aches, mouth ulcers, and bleeding in the skin. The disease was first recognized in Lassa, Nigeria, in 1969. The causative virus belongs to a group called arenaviruses and is harbored by a rat, Mastomys natalensis. The virus is spread to humans via the rat's urine in airborne droplets or contaminated food. The disease can also be caught by medical personnel treating patients in hospitals.

The incubation period of Lassa fever is 3 to 17 days. Following fever and general malaise, later stages of the disease may include abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and petechiae, tiny purplish spots in the skin caused by leakage of blood from the capillaries. Heart and kidney failure may also occur in severe cases, and mortality is high, ranging from about 15% to, among pregnant women, as much as 60%. Treatment by injection of the antiviral drug ribavirin is often successful if begun early.

Hotel George V in Paris where Reacher stayed

Four Seasons Hotel, George V, Paris, an eight-story landmark built in 1928, offers 244 luxury hotel guest rooms, an exquisite art collection and just off the Champs-Elysées.

This is where Reacher and Summer stayed while in the city.

In a city packed full to the rafters with top class historic hotels, it can be hard to stand out. The George V manages the trick, however. Since it was bought by Saudi Prince Al Waleed and subsequently revamped, it has earned a reputation as one of the finest hotels in Paris, and even the world. It also has an interesting history, having notably housed General Eisenhower during the liberation of Paris.

Cannon House Office Building

Cannon House Office Building Where John Sansom's office is located
The Cannon House Office Building, completed in 1908, is the oldest congressional office building as well as a significant example of the Beaux Arts style of architecture. It occupies a site south of the Capitol bounded by Independence Avenue, First Street, New Jersey Avenue, and C Street S.E.

Of special architectural interest is the rotunda.

Eighteen Corinthian columns support an entablature and a coffered dome, whose glazed oculus floods the rotunda with natural light. Twin marble staircases lead from the rotunda to an imposing Caucus Room, which features Corinthian pilasters, a full entablature, and a richly detailed ceiling. The Cannon Building was occupied during the 60th Congress in January 1908.

By 1913, however, the House had outgrown the available office space, and fifty-one rooms were added to the original structure by raising the roof and constructing a fifth floor. In 1962 the building was named for former Speaker Joseph Gurney Cannon.

Union Station in Los Angeles

LA's Union Station is one of the last grand train depots in America, and it's an architectural jewel built in the California Mission style. The 1939 building contains a stunning three story waiting room with a beautiful wood beamed ceiling, mosaic marbled floors and archways leading to palm tree lined patios.

The comfortable old original wooden chairs are a great place to sit and soak up the atmosphere. There is a small food court, restrooms and pay phones available.

This out-of-the-way but nearby place is where Bosch and Rider went to discuss the case in "The Closers" that was filling with signs of "high jingo."
